Google Business Profile News: Profile Views Are (Almost) Dead!

You might have noticed a significant drop in your Google Business Profile views—as much as half of what they were just a few months ago.

In response to these concerns, I’ve created a quick video explaining the recent Google Business Profile updates.

There’s no need to panic: Google hasn’t drastically changed its algorithm or reduced your visibility.

Instead, they’ve altered the way they count views on maps and searches, which is connected to their latest business performance API update—a change that is ultimately beneficial.

Reasons behind lower view counts

With the latest Google Business Profile updates, here are two core reasons why your numbers might appear lower than in previous months and years:

  • Single Impression Counting: Instead of accounting for every view of a business, multiple views within a 24-hour period are now consolidated into a single impression.
  • Revised Maps Counting: Previously, Google counted each instance a user viewed your business on maps. Now, views are only counted when a user specifically accesses your individual business profile, resulting in a smaller percentage of reported views.

Comparison of old vs. new tracking methods

  • Previous Tracking Method: Historically, a view was counted anytime a business profile appeared on a user’s screen, whether through Google search results or map results—even if it was just a pin among 25 others or a local pack result.
  • Updated API Tracking: The new system defines a Google Business Profile view as a unique user interaction, counting only the instances when your profile is viewed by unique users within a single day.

Detailed differences:

  • Focus on Unique Users: The total count of unique views now equals the number of distinct individuals who viewed your profile that day.
  • Revised Map View Definitions: Previously, all businesses displayed in a map screenshot were counted as views. Under the new system, only direct interactions with your business profile are recorded as map views.

Importance of Google Business Profile View updates

Understanding these changes is crucial, especially for dental practices adjusting to the Google Business Profile view updates.

Although it might seem like a minor tweak—shifting from total views to unique views—this shift enables a deeper insight into user behavior and intent.

Despite the apparent decrease in statistics, your visibility remains unchanged.

The new metrics provide a more accurate reflection of user engagement and interest, moving from a broad count of views and interactions to a focused count of unique daily and monthly users.
